Homai Vyarawalla, Photographer

Photo of Homai Vyarawalla from the Alkazi Collection of Photography Homai Vyarawalla passed away in January at 98 years old, a photographer and photojournalist whose career was based out of Delhi and Bombay from the 1930s through to 1970. A woman who blazed paths both as a photographer, an artist, a photo journalist documenting India's struggle for Independence and the years following, as well as a contemporary to many of the great women of the early and mid-20th Century. A woman of vision, strong will and agency. I first heard of Ms. Vyarawalla passing on PRI's The World yesterday while driving, and her story caused me to search for more information and images today. Several of Vyarawalla's images are recognizable...

The End of the Sidewalk in Buttonwillow

Sat 01.21.12 - Today Erika, Scruffy, and I drove my brother's truck from the Los Angeles area up to Pleasanton, California, to Vicky and Ed Wilson's for a short visit and to pick up some furniture. It was a short trip, enlivened greatly by Erika using my mobile to check into the most fun and/or bizarre venues on Foursquare. The above photo was my favorite from the weekend, taken with walking Scruffy in Buttonwillow with my Nokia N8....

Stop SOPA Internet Blackout Day

Wed 01.18.12 - Today was the day that many websites, large & small, blacked out and linked folks to information on protesting the current bills before the US Senate on SOPA/PIPA. The most cohesive messages today were from Google, Wikipedia, and the EFF. If you haven't been following the debate, go read those links. The best cartoons of the day were from The Oatmeal and Ed Stein....

Sunday, The 15th of January 2012

Sun 01.15.12 - I am 13 days behind in blogging the photos from my holiday to London & Edinburgh. It was a vacation in every sense, including a vacation from my blog. Oops. I took over 500 photos, but will in the next few days post the best and the brightest of the lot here along with some text for each day. Please excuse me while I now succumb to jet lag and fall asleep at least two or three hours before my normal bedtime. Photo of my Mom watching the surf and Scruffy watching the road taken this afternoon on the edge of Dog Beach with my Nokia N8....

January 2nd: Camellias blooming in London and the Grayson Perry Exhibition

Photos by Ms. Jen with her Nokia N8. Mon 01.02.12 - It must be a warm winter as a camellia bush in Bayswater is already in full bloom. Today I had the opportunity to go with Alison Austin and Andy Budd to the Grayson Perry 'The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman' exhibition at the British Museum and then to the Teddy Bear Tea afterwards in the 3rd story cafe. The exhibition was wonderful, humorous, thoughtful, and many layered; go see it. I have a new favorite artist thanks to Alison! Best part of writing this blog post is discovering that Grayson Perry's teddy bear, Alan Measles, has a blog....

Photos taken by Ms. Jen with her Nokia N8. Sun 01.01.12 - New Year's Day 2012 was a day of bringing in the social new year with several lovely friends: I had dim sum lunch at the Imperial China in SoHo with FJ van Wingerde, then FJ took me to Maison Bertaux for tea and cake where Helen Keegan met up with us for a good conversation and more tea, then I took a bit of a convoluted train trip (due to signal problems) to Blackheath to have dinner with the newlyweds Cami and Alan. It was a truly lovely day....

Photos taken by Ms. Jen with her Nokia N8. Sat 12.31.11 - The last day of 2011 was spent with a nice big walk through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park before returning to my hotel to get ready for Mecca's New Year's Eve Party in Kew just outside of London Central.
Resound #11, One Word: Forward

#resound11 Prompt 31: One Word Earlier this month, we wrote about our one word to describe 2011. Today, let's write about our one word for 2012. What word do you want to use to describe how you will approach 2012? Will it be awesome? Will it be frugal? Will it be open? Will it be the year of yes? What is your 2012? How will you resound? Sat 12.31.11 - Before I look to 2012, allow me to look back a bit. Me on Twitter today: @msjen: Actually, I am looking forward to saying goodbye and don't let the door hit you on the way out to 2009-2011. Then @technokitten RT'ed with a +1, to which I replied: @msjen: @technokitten...

Fri 12.30.11 - This afternoon, I had the marvelous opportunity to join Mecca and Michal for lunch at The Gilbert Scott in the St. Pancras Renaissance hotel. The food was lovely, the architecture amazing, and the conversation was good. It was a lovely way to ring out the old year on the Eve of New Year's Eve.
Hello London

Thurs 12.29.11 - I arrived mid-day, with a couple hundred other folk on a Boeing 777 from LAX to LHR, in London today for a two week Christmas present to myself. After cleaning up, I decided to step out in the late afternoon darkness to buy 120 film for the ADOX at Jessops, check out the sales at the various Clark's in and around Oxford Circus, and get wet as I forgot my umbrella at the hotel. Very glad to be in London....

Scruffy and Belle at Dog Beach, The ADOX Camera Version

Tues 12.27.11 - Photo of Scruffy McDoglet and Belle le Cane taken yesterday at Dog Beach in Huntington Beach, Calif, with Thomas Bertling's ADOX Golf 63 1950s era vintage bellows range finder medium format camera. I used Fujifilm 120 color film at 200 ISO and got the film developed and printed at Fromex in Long Beach. I am very pleased at the results as Thomas did not think the camera worked any longer as it was given to him by an aunt who had it since the 1950s and neither of us had a manual or much of an idea how it should work. I took the ADOX to Samy's Camera in Santa Ana yesterday morning to see if...
