October 2006 Archives

Today was the annual Belmont Shore Dog Parade, where dogs and their owners dress up in costume/fancy dress and parade around 2nd Street in Long Beach. Lucky Laura, Greg, and I, as well as Scruffy & Belle, went to watch the proceedings.
The whole event was a great deal of fun and I saw more than a few friends out in costume with their dogs. Next year I promise to dress up Scruffy...
Hands down the best dog costume of the Belmont Shore Dog Parade 2006 was the great dane pulling the gothic victoriana hearst.
Every year the Orange County Transit Authority (OCTA) holds a Bus Roadeo for the drivers, executives and "Novices". The folks at the Admin Offices get to put their name in for a draw to learn how to drive a bus and then drive in the Bus Rodeo. Julie Wanda won a slot in the raffle and got to drive this year.
Julie Wanda competed in the Administrative Novice division of the OCTA Bus Roadeo. She had only two lessons before competing in the Roadeo. JW was allowed to take friends on the bus with her during the competition. I went along to make a video of the whole thing. It was fun and very silly.
JW drove very slowly through the Serpentine course and only sped up at the end to go through the barrels. She did not take out any sheds...
Everyone has a To Do List. Some items are mundane - do laundry, go buy turkey for lunch, etc. Some are time sensitive - pay car insurance, finish design comps for client, etc. And some are long term - I am going to do that someday when I have some time but somehow the time does not come around - clean out the garage, sit down and learn to program in Ruby and Python, etc.
Over a year ago, I bookmarked "Learn to Program, by Chris Pine" and added learning Ruby to my long term to do list.
Ha! I have now installed the Ruby compiler (Thanks Hivelogic for the excellent tutorial!) on Silver Princess the PowerBook and am ready to start with Mr. Pine and Ruby. Wish me well.
After Ruby is Python and after Python is... no, I will wait until I move to clean the garage... ;o)
I was sitting on the couch reading when an airplane landing at Los Alamitos was landing and I noticed that between the shadow of the fan and the audio "shadow" of the landing Airforce / Navy jet that it was a video moment. A quiet one at that.

As my mom and I were driving southbound on the US 395 near Owens Lake, California, the sky in front of us was dark gray with thunder clouds and lightning was flashing through the sky and clouds. I was unable to take any digital stills as we were driving, but was able to take a 5 minute video and capture lightning in the 3rd or 4th minute.

To unwind from my year in Ireland, I went up with my mom to the eastside of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. One of our favorite October hikes is west of the Twin Lakes up above Bridgeport, California. This very beatiful area is north of Mono Lake and east of Yosemite. This time we took Scruffy and he refused to walk in the snow...

As I waited at the Dublin airport lounge area for my group to go through US Passport control, I noticed that the Aer Lingus plane, St. Brighid, was being loaded up with cargo and baggage. I was hoping that St. Brighid was my plane to LA and not the evil Mela. And so it was. Here is another one of my "Let's do a 5 min. one take video".

In about 30 minutes, I will have been home in SoCal from my year in Ireland for exactly 2 weeks. In those 2 weeks, I have visited lots of friends, hung out with family, had a lovely holiday in the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains, had a nice welcome home party, read three Mercedes Lackey novels, hung out with Scruffy and Belle a lot, haven't really blogged at all other than sending photos up along the way, and I have even missed Dublin a couple of times.
Kaffa in Orange has become my home office away from my currently non-existent home office. Free wifi and a lovely couch next to a power outlet all for the price of an ice tea. I have spent time here recently redesigning Alex's site, sprucing up my own, as well as working on my resume.
The two week vacation and recoup time is now over and I am now on the job market. I would love to move on up to the SF Bay area and join in the fray. If you know of or can recommend any mobile or web interface design positions for a experienced designer/developer/project manager with a M.Sc. in Computer Science such as myself, please email me.
Ok, I had great 3G/GPRS connection for moblogging all the way up through the Mojave desert and up the 395 until just before Bishop, and it has been crap ever since. There is a Cingular store in town and you would think they would have better connection if they are selling phones and service plans. Grr grr grr.
If I go stand out with a clear line of site of the White Mountains and point my phone at the Whites, then I get some 3G connection, but not enough to send a whole photo up. Grr... Grrr....
I had a great connection in Bishop and Mammoth at Christmas time, Cingular, what did you do to the network in the intervening 10 months?

Me and Alex at the Sat. night Throw Rag show at Alex's.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, I went from Dublin to LAX airport , to my brother's house, took a shower, had champagne with the family, to dinner at Walt's, then a nap, and then... to Alex's for the Throw Rag show. It was a blast. Yes, I am crazy, up and going for over 36 hours.
The Best Part of All of Saturday, other then departing from Mirkwood, was the ride home from Alex's at 2am pacific time (aka 10am Dublin time the next day) with the Irish Brothers and Julie Wanda. Karl Irish drunk dialed all his favorite ladies as we laughed and laughed and laughed in the back seat. (Karl was not driving, but in the passenger seat). Hot Karl is something else.
