Restaurant Reviews: June 2008 Archives

i was never a big fro-yo kind of girl...me, i like full-fat stuff.  (i have one of those metabolisms that you probably hate me for.)  give me real gelato any day for frozen sweetness par excellence.  so when a former roommate dragged me to The Bigg Chill Frozen Yogurt, i was NOT excited, but was willing to give it a whirl.
cut to: years later, i am still making detours to the corner of Olympic & Westwood (10850 W Olympic Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90064) to get the enormous, must-share, good-for-two-sittings Large size cup of three flavours.  usually one of them is always peanut butter, but damn if they aren't all slap-yourself-this-can't-really-be-low/non-fat super tasty.
yes, parking is mayhem, but peeps: this is L.A.  parking everywhere in this town is mayhem.  remember you will be soothing your nerves with pure cold tastiness soon enough.  you could always park around the block off Olympic, but oh yeah! this is L.A. and god forbid you should WALK.  prices are reasonable (portions are a lot bigger than you think), service is always friendly even when the place is crammed to the gills with girls who think they are losing weight by snarfing down fro-yo.
comparing this place to pinkberry is like comparing In-N-Out to, say, Fatburger.  both good, but you love 'em for very different reasons.  Bigg Chill does serve a pinkberry-esque tart flavour if you must have it...but hey, do yourself a favour and cut it together with a serving of the Snickers or Chocolate Almond flavour.  you will not regret it.

for those of you not on the Westside who want to get your frozen lowfat treat mojo on, i highly recommend trotting down to your local Trader Joe's and getting an iteration of their branded Organic Soy Creamy Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert.  i like the bars -- there's a fudge one, and an orange creamsicle one -- both in traditional popsicle-on-a-stick forms. there are also mini sandwiches (they're ok) and quarts of various flavours (like cherry chocolate chip).  even those of us who are lactose-tolerant don't always have to eat ice cream, you know.  don't be fooled by words like "organic," "non-dairy," or even "lowfat" -- this stuff is really, really tastylicious.  plus, if you're the prone-to-guilt type, you get to feel sort of righteous about eating them because of those words.  double bonus!
